Legend of Quan Yin / Avalokiteshvara

Quan Yin, also known as Avalokiteshvara, is the Goddess of Compassion and Mercy. Avalokiteshvara means 'One who hears the cries of the world.' She is the embodiment of infinite compassion and mercy. Long ago she vowed not to return to the heavenly realms until all living beings in the earthly realms had been liberated from suffering. To accomplish this, She travels to all realms of the universe offering Her compassionate blessings to all beings.

She is depicted carrying a small vase of healing water, the "Water of Life." With this water devotees and all living things are blessed with physical and spiritual peace. She holds a sheaf of ripe rice as a symbol of fertility and sustenance.

There are numerous legends that recount the miracles which Quan Yin performs to help those who call on Her. The Goddess of Mercy is utterly free from pride or vengefulness, She remains reluctant to punish even those to whom severe karmic lessons might be appropriate.

The many stories and legends of the Goddess Quan Yin serve to convey the idea of an enlightened being who embodies the attributes of an all pervasive, all consuming, loving compassion and who is accessible to everyone. Quan Yin offers counsel to us by Her actions so we too will be inspired to cultivate within ourselves these same qualities of mercy and compassion for all living beings.
